Passion Week

Four nights all pointing to the resurrection

March 26th

Day of Fasting

Fasting
On Tuesday March 26th we will be fasting as a church body. We will be setting aside eating (or an alternative) from when the sun comes up to when we break our fast at dinnertime. This time is not only to focus on our need for God and his sustenance, but to lay those things we’re fasting from at his feet as an offering. Our fasting is a way to proclaim a desire to see God glorified. As we fast, we want to intentionally engage in our relationship with God in prayer. As we break our fast, we eat together in community and collectively thank God for His provision. During the breaking of our fast we enjoy a meal with one another in celebration and anticipation for what God will do.

Tips for your day of fasting:

  • Identify what it is you will be fasting from. Fasting from food is the traditional option but if you have any specific medical needs or are pregnant, we suggest that you fast from anything else that you may have a deep dependence on.
  • Eat a smaller meal the night before if you are fasting from food.
  • Do not change your schedule. Instead have your mealtimes or other designated times throughout the day to focus on God.
  • Do not make a spectacle of your fasting. Instead make it a discrete time of intimacy between you and the Lord.
  • Kids should not be forced to fast, but the principle of fasting should be taught as they watch you participate.
  • Break your fast in community. Keep Jesus at the center of that time.

Things to pray throughout the day of fasting:

  • Tell God how much greater he is than what you are fasting from. Praise Him for the fact that He is enough. Ask God to accept this offering and move in your life throughout the day.
  • Pray for those around you who are far from God. Thank God for the Gospel of Jesus and how it has changed your life. Ask God to give you opportunities to share that gospel. Pray that the hearts of those around you will be receptive to the Spirit.
  • Pray that the church and specifically Passion Week will bring God glory and honor. Pray for all the small details that will be happening throughout the week. Ask God to prepare your heart and the hearts of other believers as we remember the Gospel. Thank Him for the community of other believers and the community with Jesus himself.
